Last weekend, Michael Dunlop won all five races at the Armoy Road Races, riding a mix of Honda, Yamaha, and BMW bikes depending on the class. Regardless of the bike or class, the winners all had one thing in common: they all used Dunlop tyres.
The cancellation of long-running races like the Isle of Man TT and the North West 200 due to the lockdown will influence the 2020 and 2021 road racing seasons. The Armoy Road Races, which began in 2009 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, received even greater attention as a result of this.
The 32-year-old home rider blew off the competition to win the main event for the eighth time in a row, completing a five-race winning streak. He had already won the Supersport and Open A Superbike races the day before. Michael Dunlop currently has a total of 24 victories at Armoy.
However, for Dunlop, it established a new Superbike lap record of 106.945mph in the Open race, giving the new BMW M1000RR its first Irish road racing victory. This was a major result for Dunlop tyres, as the road-legal version of the superbike comes standard with Dunlop SportSmart TT rubber. Michael Dunlop picked the Dunlop KR109 and KR108 superbike slicks for the event. Interestingly, in addition to the Superbike victories, Michael Dunlop won both races in the 600cc Supersport class with the Dunlop D213 GP Pro.

Pat Walsh of Dunlop Motorsport explained the significance of the wins for the tyre manufacturer: “Every one of Michael’s wins was taken on a Dunlop tyre that can be bought off the shelf for track day and amateur racing. It shows the breadth and versatility of the tyre range. Congratulations to Michael on a brilliant set of five wins on three marques of bikes.”
